Publishing has changed from lead type to cold type, composed in a computer. I saw all this happen first hand, so one of my missions in teaching technology is to prepare my students for changes in technology that will occur in their lives. In fact I believe more people read online or digital publications than they do paper or hard copies. Communicating will always be an important skill, but the means will only change. Technology has changed the methods we use to communicate. This is why the Promote Georgia project fits so well into our curriculum. The students use the web to communicate ideas and concepts. Lego Robotics is used to give a hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming, with physical results. Technology is changing daily--for students to succeed outside the classroom, they have to be prepared to change with it. The student must learn to think outside the box, without a teacher giving all the answers. In order to accomplish this goal, I facilitate the project rather than tell the student how to do every step. At Brooks County Middle School, we have a large number of multimedia computers available to students and faculty, to expand our understanding of current technology. Our staff is InTech trained and uses the computers in the classroom and the labs. We have purchased software to enhance student achievement in academic subject areas, as well as productivity applications. Our
goal in Brooks County is to fully prepare our students for whatever they
will encounter in their future, including upcoming changes in the area
of technology." |
